Derrick is the Founder and Co-owner of MahoganyBooks, a nationally recognized and award-winning, independent bookstore. Under Derrick’s leadership, MahoganyBooks has become a cultural and community enterprise that provides a space and platform for local and national authors, celebrity writers, and community leaders. Over the years, MahoganyBooks has featured President Barack Obama, U.S. Representative John Lewis, April Ryan, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jason Reynolds, Misty Copeland, Gabrielle Union, and D.C.'s Mayor for Life Marion Barry among others.

Derrick understands that culturally relevant books are essential to equipping children with identity, self-esteem, and innovative thinking. He works tirelessly to promote literacy and partner MahoganyBooks with like-minded businesses and community organizations to increase awareness and access to such books, especially for youth.

Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Derrick is a proud alum of Bowie State University. He also remains an avid comic book and sneaker collector.
